The Quest 3 device was announced to be available for pre-order at Connect 2023, on September 27th. I placed my order and noted the estimated delivery date as October 10th. Surely that can’t be real I thought. Since the announcement was, they would be available on the 10th. BUT to my surprise, and kudos for their shipping, my device ARRIVED on October 10th — CRAZY!

Device in hand/on face, the Full color pass-through alone is worth the upgrade. Reminiscent of Microsoft HoloLens’ spatial mapping, the auto-boundary creation is very welcome. “First Encounters” mixed-reality game was fun. The graphics of Quest 3 are much more vivid and lively. Augments began bouncing around my living room as I wantonly shot-away pieces of my walls, trying to tag the creatures and revealing the space themed other-worldly backdrop behind the real walls. The parallax created from the depth sensor is convincing enough to want to blow more of my pass-thru walls away to see the whole of the virtual landscape. Taking the headset off was disappointing; to realize my walls were intact, and back to reality.

Although you can read your phone in the pass-thru, it is a bit difficult at arm’s length, but bringing it closer clears up the image enough. I Can’t wait to try out working in VR with the Quest 3!
